A Study on the Knowledge and Attitude of High School Students toward Sex


Abstract
The questionnaire about the knowledge and attitudes toward sex were carried on 1192 high school students in Seoul and rural areas from Sep. 10 to Sep. 28, 1976 to disclose following results.
1. 80.4% of boys and 50.2% of girls answered the sex is divine and beautiful. 22.0% of girls answered sex is filthy and ugly.
2. The virginity of woman is expected more seriously than that of man.
3. They have more anatomical and physiological knowledge about same sex than that of other sex. The higher the grade is, the more knowledge they have.
4. Boys have more knowledge about female anatomy and physiology than the girls¢¥ knowledge about male¢¥s.
5. 99.7% of girls experienced menarche at their average age of 14.5¡¾1,40. 62.0% of bo ys experienced nocturnal emission at their average age of 15.3¡¾1.39.
6. At menarche 16.2% girls in Seoul and 38.4% of girls in rural places managed their menache by themselves. But most of them (60.7%) required someone¢¥s help.
7. On the feelings about menarche or nocturnal emission, boys answered good (30.0¡Æ0), no feeling (16.2%) and girls answered anxious (27.6%), shameful (20.1%).
8. They have experienced masturbation 71.3% in boys and 12.2% in girls. 49.8% of boys and 15.8% of girls answered masturbations do not make any physical problems. But lots of boys (31.7%) and girls (48.55c) are anxious about the later hazard.
9. They know about contraceptive methods with oral pills, condoms, loops, and menstrual cycles in the same order. 12.7= of boys and 21.5% of girls do not know about any contraceptive method.
10. Only 13. % of boys and 25.1 o girls discussed with their parents or elder siblings -about sex.
11. Their most frequent requests in sex education are about the way of dating. Boys want to know the methods of sexual intercourse, prevention of venereal diseases and contraceptive methods. Girls want to know anatomy of sexual organ,F physiology of pregnancy and labor and method of intercourse.
12. They want to be instructed about the sexes in the lecture of biology, physical education, home economics (38.6%), regular curriculum (23.2%), special lectures (21.7%) and by the counselor or school nurse (12.0%).
